January is traditionally a time for “out with the old, in with the new” with sweeping resolutions for a fresh start. Thankfully we’ve been somewhat more protective of our built environment over the years and retained much of the heritage and architectural gems displayed in our old towns. But there’s also a definite need for new build. The UK is desperately short of housing, and in November’s Budget Chancellor Philip Hammond announced plans to build five new garden towns as part of the government’s ambitious plans to significantly boost house-building in the UK.
