What buyers want in 2020
Friday, July 31, 2020
A survey by Nationwide in May 2020 highlighted several behavioural shifts as people have reassessed their housing needs and preferences following a period of life in lockdown. Some 15% of those surveyed for example were considering moving as a direct result of life in lockdown and with this came new, different requirements in terms of their ideal home.
Rightmove research (also from May) confirms this with 39% of buyers and 49% of tenants saying that their priorities have changed. Buyers are increasingly looking for a bigger garden, more space, access to parking or a garage, a home office or space to create one and access to green spaces nearby.
In addition to these requirements, and perhaps not surprisingly given the increase in numbers working from home recently, a new study from TalkTalk shows a growing trend of buyers looking for good broadband links and a strong, reliable internet connection. 53% of those surveyed put good broadband as a priority above double glazing (46%) nearby shops (36%) and public transport (35%). 75% of respondents listed a garden or outdoor space as a priority. Over 20% of those responding said they anticipate working from home more often following the Coronavirus outbreak.
