Summer Security

Now that warmer weather is at last on its way, we’re spending more time in our gardens preparing for summer and enjoying holidays away from home. But spare a thought for your property’s security as the season changes; a few simple checks will keep you and your property safe through the summer months especially while you’re away.

At home, in addition to making sure that windows and patio doors are locked at night, if you are in the back garden close windows at the front of your house and keep valuables out of sight. Don’t leave keys near the front door and if you’re away ask a neighbour you trust to keep an eye on the house and make sure parcels aren’t left on your doorstep. Use timer-switches to turn on lamps when it gets dark but don’t leave curtains shut while you’re away as this flags up that your house is unattended. Take care when posting holiday plans and photos on public social networking sites - burglars could use the information to their advantage.

Outdoors, keep ladders and tools under lock and key when you have finished using them so that you don’t assist burglars and lock away any valuable items such as lawnmowers and other garden tools. Consider coding bikes, mowers etc in line with local police advice and protect your property with the Immobilise Property Register! It’s a good idea to keep your shed and garage door closed so that the contents are not on view to would be thieves. Check that locks are robust and working properly and if you have any concerns fit security lighting with motion detectors.Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition and lock side gates to prevent access to the rear of the property.

There are all kinds of remote security devices available which link to your phone while you’re away but often a good alarm system and simple safety measures are sufficient for peace of mind and the chance to relax and enjoy your holiday. For more information click here.
