Summer Living

Although it may not feel like it at times, Summer is here! And if you haven’t done so already, now’s the time to transform your outdoor space ready for some late summer sunshine. Instant changes are well worth making even if you’re thinking of moving. Whether you are getting your property ready to sell or are renting a property you can make stunning changes that are inexpensive or that you can take with you when you move. Here’s some inspiration to suit all budgets and ideas that you can tailor to your specific needs.
Choose one area to start with and create a vibrant space for entertaining. Whether it’s a tiny patio or a roof terrace, maximise how you make use of the space. Buy new furniture for dining outdoors or upcycle existing items with a splash of paint. For the wow factor when al fresco dining choose a table with an integrated gas fire pit system allowing you to enjoy your garden long into the evening even in early autumn.
An outdoor kitchen makes a real statement if you have the budget, the space and love eating outdoors. Ensure all appliances are suitable for outdoor use and that they are suitably protected from the elements. Add privacy by enclosing your space to make it feel like an extra “garden room”. A pergola covered with climbing plants adds shade where you need it or create a shady spot with parasols or awnings. Use of scented plants like jasmine, lavender and honeysuckle will make your oasis even more relaxing. For extra relaxation, install a hammock or swing seat.
To make the most of your garden after dark, invest in some good lighting for your outdoor “room” and light paths and steps. Outdoor lanterns, low voltage lighting and solar lights all add to the drama and can magically transform your garden. Add a fireplace, or fire pit for warmth and beauty and make sure guests are cosy with some throws and cushions.
A garden room is a practical way to create extra living space or a home office and if it’s done well, can also add value so choose one that’s in keeping with your home and garden. Ideally, buy a professionally designed building from a specialist supplier and hire a builder to install it. On a limited budget or for something less permanent, have fun converting a garden shed with a lick of paint, fairy lights and some well-chosen accessories.
A hot tub may be the ultimate in relaxation, but consider your privacy, access to the house, and whether you want the tub in sunshine or shade. It will need a strong base as it may weigh up to 2 tons when full of water! If undecided, you could hire one for a weekend and perhaps a garden cinema set-up too.
However you decide to transform your garden, choose something that you and your family will enjoy. Garden improvements may add the “wow” factor but they may not actually add to the value of your home, so it’s worth checking before you invest significant money.
If you would like a free appraisal of your property for rental or sale purposes and advice on how to add value indoors or out, contact your local Frost Partnership office. Then put your feet up, relax and enjoy the summer.
