Safe as houses?
Wednesday, October 9, 2019
As autumn fades and the evenings are darker earlier, now’s the time to attend to home security. October is officially National Home Security Month (supported by Thames Valley Police) and with an increase in burglaries after the clocks go back, it offers information and support so that your home, family and belongings are protected. First launched in 2013, each week the campaign looks at different aspects of security with tips on how to up your game. Whether you are thinking of selling, letting or staying put this winter, here are some ways to keep you and your property “as safe as houses” and give your home added appeal in the process.
Smart security is on the rise with an array of wireless and smart home security systems available. Basically it’s a set of internet-connected security cameras, motion sensors, door locks, window/door sensors and even sirens that connect wirelessly together. Most systems are driven by a ‘hub’ that’s connected directly to your broadband router. The hub sends information wirelessly from each element of the system to and from your smartphone. Once connected, if someone opens a door or triggers a sensor, you receive an alert on your phone. If they are caught on camera, you’ll receive a picture or video clip. Some systems can action an alarm or contact the emergency services, or enable you to talk through the camera. And it’s is not just for preventing crime, it can also help you check on elderly relatives, pets or your teens at home!
Around £200, buys a basic system with camera, hub and a door/window sensor. Additional sensors cost about £30, with extra cameras from £100. For a three-bedroom house, budget at least £500. And don’t forget many systems also require you to have a monthly subscription to get the best features. Research carefully to work out the best option for you and don’t be scared by the technology. Most are auto-set up once sensors are in place and there are systems designed especially for technophobes!
A burglary happens approximately every 40 seconds in the UK and unsurprisingly homes without security measures are five times more likely to be burgled. To avoid this, the most important factor is to make your home secure with dead-bolting doors and window locks. Alarm boxes and outdoor security cameras and lights are also great deterrents. They don’t need to be expensive and by installing simple security measures that meet the required British Standard, you can reduce your home insurance premiums by up to 5%.
• Ensure external timber doors are secured with a mortice lock that meets British Standards
• If you have a PVC-u or composite door, consider upgrading the cylinder to a British Standard, TS007 Kitemarked model.
• Fit window locks to all ground floor windows and accessible ones upstairs • Motion-sensitive lighting above doors, garages and side gates is a good idea
• Lighting is vital for security and new fittings can be aesthetically pleasing too In winter, woodburners and candles make our homes cosy but install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to warn you of potential danger.
Most fire services offer FREE Safety Checks to help you reduce risks and to have an escape plan in place should the worst happen. If you’re away from home use timer-switches to turn lights and radios on or off to make your property appear occupied. Motion activated security lighting increases visibility for you and welcomes your guests but also acts as a great deterrent to thieves. Keep sheds containing bikes, mowers and tools securely locked and above all take out good home and contents insurance.
