International style this summer

Whether you are jetting off to far flung places or are planning a staycation this summer, it’s a great time to think about adding a touch of international style to your interior décor. Take inspiration from your dream destination to create your very own corner of Greece, Asia, South America with bold colours, designs, textures and accessories. The internet is a great place to start if you’re not actually going overseas - just let your imagination take flight!

Indulge your passion for pattern and be inspired by global designs from Aztec prints to Asian silks and tribal symbols in earthy tones and jewel bright colours. Work global motifs and colours into accessories such as throws, cushions and blinds. The addition of a statement piece such as a striking handmade rug or large ornament will evoke memories of your travels at a glance.

Furniture can really set the theme of a room with accessories and décor then following suit. Low seating, for example, has always been a part of middle eastern interior décor and can be used for a cosy lounge area with colourful pouffes and low coffee tables. Add ornate rugs - a hallmark of Middle Eastern décor – and lanterns to recreate a Marrakesch look. Moorish design is famous for geometric patterns, and nothing says “Morocco” better than authentic patterned tiles in bright blues and white with splashes of colour.

If you prefer a more minimalist approach, opt for Japanese designs focussing on tranquility with understated ceramics and delicate, hand-painted pottery in traditional shapes and colours. Or “visit” Scandinavia for clean, design lines, simple palettes including black and white and the use of calligraphy in pale, elegant interiors.

South America provides a wealth of inspiration for international style, from Brazil’s carnival culture to rainforest hardwoods, whitewash walls to neon Aztec textiles. Start with a white wall canvas and build from there, adding simple wood furniture then a riot of colour in accessories and even exotic plants or flowers in terracotta or glazed pots.

Closer to home, European countries and culture can really spark your decorative imagination. High ceilings, pale décor and ornate gilded mirrors can create a Parisian salon feel or get an Italian vibe with luxury silk and velvet soft furnishings and colourful Murano glass.

You may well have souvenirs from previous trips to accessorize the look, so think of creative ways to reframe and use those for international style without leaving home.
