Homeowners get the green light
Friday, July 10, 2020
Homeowners in England are set to get up to £5,000 worth of vouchers to make their homes more energy efficient, as part of a £3 billion green jobs package announced in Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s summer statement on Wednesday.
For one year from September, under the Green Homes Grant, homeowners including landlords will be able to apply for vouchers to assist in funding energy-saving home improvements. The grants will cover at least two-thirds of the cost of the improvement, up to £5,000 per household. And for low income households, it will go even further with vouchers covering the full cost at up to £10,000.
The government hopes that the funding will increase the energy efficiency of some 650,000 homes as well as saving households £300 per year on bills. The measures will also support approximately 140,000 green jobs.
Energy saving grants offered will total £2 billion for a range of energy saving home improvements, such as insulation installation, double glazing and replacement of old boilers. The remainder of the financial package will be spent in the public sector, for example to make schools and hospitals more environmentally friendly, with £50 million to improve social housing with insulation, double glazing and heat pumps.
The funding also aims to help Britain meet its target to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.
