Fall in love with your home

If you are mid-property search and not finding your perfect property, it’s maybe worth looking at things afresh and, with a little love and inspiration, you may find your dream home is closer than you think. Look again at the properties you’ve viewed. What did you love or hate about them? Could you change the things you didn’t like? Or is your best option to stay put and improve? Here’s some great ways to rediscover the heart of your home.

For many people the kitchen is the heart of the home; warm, welcoming and the perfect place to add value if you are updating. Whether you’re an amazing chef or a “needs must” cook a well- designed kitchen can be a great asset. Whatever your budget, planning is all important to make your investment worthwhile. A good kitchen can last decades so it’s vital to get it right. Consider storage, light and workspace in the final layout and a style that will stand the test of time.

If you’d rather relax than spend time in the kitchen, why wait for spring to revamp your home? Consider a new colour scheme for the living room or bedroom; February is the perfect time to give your home some TLC. Contrasting with the hi-gloss, super shiny styling of 2016, this year sees the growing influence of nature where décor is concerned. Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2017 confirms this - a cheery shade of green to represent refreshment and revitalization. Wood finishes, marble wallpaper, and butterflies (symbolizing grace and optimism) are everywhere. Metallics are still on trend, but copper is the metal of choice. Navy is the new black and whether you reupholster your sofa in navy or paint your kitchen a moody blue, it will give your home a contemporary, fresh vibe.

With Spring just weeks away, now’s the time to lavish some attention on your garden so that when warmer days arrive it can firmly plant itself in your affections. Put up a bird box out of prevailing winds and strong sunlight, 1-3m above the ground, ideally on a tree trunk. Clear leaves from early snowdrops so you can see these flowers emerge and dig over borders, adding organic matter to enrich the soil. Although temperatures may be rising, there can be frosts as late as May so insulate vulnerable plants, pots and taps with garden fleece. Create new beds and borders to give your garden a new look marking out shapes with sand trickled from a bottle and when it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative or paint for protection and colour.

Whether it’s a new kitchen or a lick of paint, a little effort goes a long way towards turning an uninspiring property into your dream home. So look again and see whether some inspiration could make you fall in love with your home. Or click here to start your property search.
