Along the river in search of your dream home

Riverside living has always been popular, especially when summer temperatures soar. There is something instantly calming and cooling about a river view and people love the tranquillity and ever-changing landscape. With early morning mists and long summer days adding to the ambience, riverside properties are often in high demand, and can command a premium especially if the property comes with a mooring and mainstream access.

A boom in riverside development in recent years has brought a buzz to the stretch of the Thames from Staines-upon-Thames to Windsor and beyond with residents taking advantage of the views, light and riverside amenities.

Staines-upon-Thames itself has a lot going for it - close to Heathrow and blue chip employers, a quick commute to London, excellent transport links and competitive house prices. Its riverside location gives it another dimension allowing it to capitalise on its greatest asset; the River Thames. It’s a vibrant riverside town offering a lifestyle to match. The area around Staines Bridge has been the focus of a redevelopment programme in recent years with apartments, cafés, and other leisure facilities along the waterfront promenade.

Just a few miles upriver, is Wraysbury to all appearances a rural village but with two train stations on the line from Windsor to London Waterloo. With easy access to the M25 and Heathrow, Wraysbury is ideal for city commuters and international travellers alike, yet retains its historic charm and riverside appeal. History and romance abound in its heritage – the area is rumoured to be where Henry VIII courted Anne Boleyn, and where the Magna Carta was really signed in 1215. During the 1930s, gravel pits were a blight on the landscape but have now come into their own as beautiful lakes where wildlife flourishes, and where sailing, fishing and watersports are enjoyed all year round.

Windsor needs no introduction; the town has hosted fairytale royal weddings and Olympic events in recent years. The town is packed with entertainment, shops, bars and restaurants with Windsor Castle the jewel in the crown. The Thames separates Windsor from historic Eton and offers boat hire for a leisurely cruise. You’re spoilt for choice when eating out: Côte boasts excellent value and river views whilst quintessentially English Browns has a cracking spot by the Thames. Gilbey’s in Eton is excellent for lunch or dinner while Marmara brings a sizzle of the Mediterranean.

Further upriver still are the riverside towns of Marlow and Maidenhead, offering riverside walks, parks, hotels and restaurants. From historic landmarks and royal pageantry to scenic parkland and the picturesque River Thames, there’s much to explore this summer for those seeking a riverside property.
