Safety first!

The UK appears to be getting increasingly stormy as illustrated this week by Storm Eleanor. Across Britain, homes were left without power, properties suffered structural damage and many were flooded. Before the next storm blows in, a few precautions could help you to minimise any damage. So here are some tips to protect your home and get back to normal if your property is damaged.
• Keep an emergency kit handy in case of power cuts and other service interruptions. Include bottled water, a first aid kit, torch, candles and matches and a fully charged mobile phone.
• Check trees around your property, remove and secure any branches loosened by storm damage.
• Check your home insurance is up to date for peace of mind.
• Property maintenance can really minimise storm damage so check for loose roof tiles and secure or replace them before they cause further damage to your home. • Keep guttering and drains free of leaves and debris to avoid rainwater overflowing into your home.
• Secure or store garden furniture that might be dangerous if it blows around in high winds.
• Keep your distance from any damage to power lines and report this to emergency services.
• After the storm, call your insurance company, contractors or the emergency services if necessary to report significant damage.
• Above all, safety first!
